Press Release: Newark Public Schools Opens The Newark School of Architecture & Interior Design

Big news from Newark!

The Newark Public Schools district has officially opened the Newark School of Architecture & Interior Design (NSAID) — a cutting-edge public high school dedicated to architecture, interior design, and the skilled trades.

Located in the beautifully restored former St. James Hospital, NSAID represents what’s possible when vision, collaboration, and opportunity come together.

Created in partnership with Pratt Institute and Newmark Associates, the school gives students hands-on experience in design and construction fields — from drafting and modeling to HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems.

Key highlights:

  • First cohort: 212 ninth-grade students (Class of 2029)
  • Designed with help from Pratt Institute faculty
  • Part of NPS’s ongoing effort to reimagine and expand specialized high school options
  • The 65th school in the district and the 11th new one since 2018

As Superintendent León said:

“This is what happens when vision, collaboration, and persistence come together.”

Congratulations to everyone who made this possible — the students, educators, partners, and community members shaping the next generation of designers and builders.
